Navigating the complexities of technology licensing, particularly in rapidly evolving fields like wireless communications and IoT, requires innovative solutions. This webinar explores the benefits of patent pools in fostering a balanced and sustainable innovation ecosystem. Patent pool advantages and practical applications will be discussed by a panel of patent owner, implementer, patent attorney and IP counsel.

Speakers’ bio

Valentina Piola, Program Manager, Sisvel

Valentina Piola is a seasoned licensing professional with over 15 years’ experience at SISVEL Group, where she began her career with the successful MPEG Audio licensing program.

Holding a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Turin and a postgraduate degree in International Trade Law from the International Training Centre (ILO), she now leads global licensing programmes for cutting-edge technologies like VP9 and AV1 in the video codec area, and recently MIOTY, expanding her experience in the IoT space.

She is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

Valentina also serves on the board of LES Italy and she is a member of AICIPI and AIPPI.


Harold Barrault, Vice President Licensing, Orange

Harold Barrault was appointed VP Licensing at Orange Group in 2017, in the Intellectual Property & Licensing department, part of Orange Research. This fully integrated business unit manages patents, licensing, partnerships, and all associated legal matters. His team specializes in patent licensing, patent portfolio strategy, and business intelligence.

With a background in business and information technology, Harold brings over 25 years of international experience, including expatriation in Silicon Valley, Madagascar, and Poland.

Prior to his current role, he led innovation initiatives for Orange affiliates in Spain, England, and Romania. His career includes diverse roles in information technology companies of all sizes, from start-ups to large enterprises. He has held positions ranging from technical expert to product marketing, large project management, transformation programs, business development, managing director, and entrepreneur.


Kristian Sæther, Product Director, Long Range Business Unit, Nordic Semiconductor

Kristian serves as the product director in Nordic Semiconductor’s Long Range Business Unit. His product responsibilities cover product solutions and cloud services for cellular, non-terrestrial, and other low power wide area radio technologies.

Passionate about pioneering technologies that promise to revolutionize industries, he joined Nordic’s cellular team in 2019. Prior to his current role, he accumulated 15 years of diverse experience from Atmel, Microchip and Novelda, where he held various positions in R&D, applications, marketing, product, and strategic management across different product lines. Kristian holds an M.Sc. in cybernetics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.


Matteo Baroni, European and Italian Patent Attorney, Metroconsult CEO

Since 2012, Matteo Baroni has worked as an Intellectual Property Consultant at Metroconsult. Until 2024, he was the Director of the Milan office, and he is currently the CEO of the firm.

Matteo is a patent and trademark attorney registered before the European Patent Office (EPO), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), and the Italian Patent and Trademark Office (UIBM).

He has been involved in the IP field since 2000, mainly handling patent matters in the electronics, software, and telecommunications sectors. He has gained significant experience in dealing with essential patents for several technological standards (e.g.: UMTS, LTE, x-DSL, Wi-Fi, DVB), both in the drafting and prosecution phases. He also provides technical support in opposition and litigation issues. Matteo also works on trademark and corporate design-related matters.


Giovanni Galimberti, Managing Partner and Head of Italian IP department @ Bird&Bird

As well as being one of the founding partners of our Italian operations, Giovanni Galimberti is Managing Partner and head of Bird & Bird’s Italian Intellectual Property department.

Offering expertise in all IP matters including patents, trademarks, design, trade secrets, copyright and unfair competition, Giovanni leads the team assisting clients in sectors including life science, electronics, automotive mechanical and food & beverage.

In patent matters, he has handled and coordinated numerous pan-European litigation for national and international clients in particular in life sciences & healthcare and tech & comms sectors both at national and UPC level.

In trademark matters, Giovanni assists several Fortune 500 companies in the food sector and some consortia in disputes relating to infringement of their well-known trademarks, geographical indications and appellations of origin.

In recent years, he has contributed to Italian and European legal magazines in the field of patent and trademark law.

He is the President of EPLAW, being also member of AIPPI, AIPLA, INTA, LES.
